Day Package 1 We're So Very British 

Language learning theme and activity 
Let's talk about the weather: language games, songs, rhymes and idioms to improve pupils' knowledge of weather phrases. 
Applying language skills activity 
A Taste of Britain - food experience. Pupils sample typical British food items including marmite soldiers, custard cream biscuits, Stilton cheese, salt 'n' vinegar crisps etc. 
"Out and about" activity 
Half-day trip to the small market town of Sherborne - town trail followed by a visit to Sherborne Abbey; tea-time treat in one of the town's cafes; shopping for souvenirs. 
Evening activity 
British fun and games: anything from "welly wanging" to Morris Dancing, playing "tag" or Duck Duck Goose - this promises to be an experience your pupils will remember for years to come!

A taste of Literature - reading and discussing an extract from The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter (1866-1943). Vocabulary related to gardens and herbs.

Playing 'Gathering a Garden' board game or garden-themed craft activity. 
"Out and about" activity 
Peter Rabbit Trail at Stourhead - Half Day trip to the National Trust property of Stourhead with its stunning landscaped gardens. Pupils complete a nature trail with plenty of opportunity to practise their English. Ice-cream treat at the end! 
Evening activity 
Film night: watch an animated (Rascal Rebel Rabbit - PG rating) or live action historical drama (Miss Potter - PG rating - staring Renee Zellweger) or Board games evening including Happy Families.

Half-Day Trip to Wookey Hole, one of the South West's favourite family attractions and film location of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets! With caves, witches, a paper-making demonstration, a mirror maze and much more, your pupils are sure to be entertained all afternoon! 
Evening activity 
Film Night: watch Magic Beyond Words: The J.K. Rowling Story (a 2011 live action film depicting the biography of the Harry Potter author - certificate 12) or Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone (PG-rated) - the evening activity would start earlier to ensure that pupils can watch the full 2h 30min film. Alternatively, a Harry Potter Quiz can be offered.

Applying language skills activity 
Cookery workshop - The Great British Bake off! Pupils bake seasonal cakes and treats which may include apple & blackberry crumble, mince pies, Victoria sponge etc. - and which we will eat at lunchtime. 
"Out and about" activity 
Half-day trip to the town of Cheddar where we can watch "the only Cheddar made in Cheddar" demonstration, as well as taste the difference between cave-matured, mild and flavoured cheddars. Weather permitting, we can climb "Jacob's Ladder" and get a stunning view of Somerset from the top of Cheddar Gorge. Fudge and sweet-making demonstrations are available at certain times of the year. 
Evening activity 
This is what the real Brits do: enjoy a hearty pub meal (in a real pub!) and play skittles (a game similar to bowling but so much more authentic).

"Magical Mystery Tour" - an audio trail around Bruton, taking in the beautiful Somerset views, concluding with a musical extravaganza at the world-renowned Hauser & Wirth Somerset art gallery & gardens.

Numbers and verbs related to sport; likes & dislikes games and activities.

Sports Trail around the School Grounds - who can race around the site and solve the clues the quickest? 
"Out and about" activity 
English Team Sports - learn to play team sports such as netball, hockey and/or La Crosse; or choose The Wimbledon Experience, complete with strawberries & cream! Alternatively and weather permitting, your English sports experience may take the form of a Swimming Gala in our on-site heated outdoor pool. 
Evening activity 
"Race Night" - place your bets on your favourite horse! This indoor activity is very popular in schools and at village days. It sounds a lot like gambling, but without the financial risk-taking and with all the fun and adrenaline! 
Making marmalade 

Day Package 7 Paddington Bear 

Language learning theme and activity 
A Taste of Literature - reading and discussing an extract from A Bear Called Paddington by Michael Bond (1926-2017). Vocabulary related to suitcases, travelling and London! 
Applying language skills activity 
Cookery Workshop: Marmalade-Making! Paddington, the fictional bear with his battered, old suitcase, loved marmalade sandwiches. Pupils learn how to make this very British breakfast spread and have a ready-made souvenir to take home! At breaktime, they also sample some marmalade sandwiches and hot buttered toast (another one of Paddington's favourites!). 
"Out and about" activity 
Half-Day Trip to the City of Wells - pupils are set the challenge of completing a town trail (answering questions, going into shops and interacting with real shopkeepers, practising spoken English). Often described as "England's smallest city", Wells boasts a stupendous cathedral (built between the 12th and 15th centuries) and a good range of shops, including a visit to a family-run toy shop and a traditional old sweet shop 
Evening activity 
Film Night - watch Paddington (a 2014 live-action and animated film, PG rating) or Paddington 2 (2017 live-action and animated film, PG rating). 
Fun with music 

Day Package 8 James Bond 007 This is a luxury package which is subject to a £15 surcharge 

Language learning theme and activity 
Language games revolving around cars and travel. A focus on learning how to use comparatives & superlatives. Playing mystery word games such as "I spy". 
Applying language skills activity 
Hands-on music workshop on theme tunes from James Bond movies such as Skyfall by Adele or Live and Let Die by Paul McCartney. 
"Out and about" activity 
Half-day trip to Haynes Motor Museum - pupils will enjoy seeing cars on display such as the DB4 Aston Martin, the predecessor to the DB5, featured in James Bond's Goldfinger. An excellent opportunity to use that car vocabulary pupils learned in the morning and to complete a language activity based on comparatives and superlatives! 
Evening activity 
Board games evening - The murder-mystery game Cluedo was first developed in 1949 by Leeds-based games manufacturer Waddingtons and provides an excellent opportunity to develop language skills relating to rooms and household items.

How to describe people - facial and other features, clothing, hair, general appearance. 
Applying language skills activity 
Craft activity - Royals Past and Present. Pupils will learn to follow instructions in English and make a crown. Playing Who's Who? is an ideal way to practise describing people. 
"Out and about" activity 
Half-day trip to Montacute House. This National Trust property holds the most extensive collection of portraits in the world! Having learned how to describe facial features in the morning, pupils will be set language-related tasks to be able to describe these portraits with the accuracy of an art connoisseur! We also go for Cream Tea (scones with clotted cream and strawberry jam), a quintessentially British treat!

Applying language skills activity 
"Cookery workshop - baking jam tarts! Inspired by Alice in Wonderland and the Queen of Hearts, we make (and eat!) jam tarts. 
"Out and about" activity 
Half-day trip to Frome - Like Alice, we go on an adventure, exploring the charming Somerset town of Frome, the birthplace of Formula One Racer Jenson Button! Pupils are set the challenge of completing a town trail (answering questions, going into shops and interacting with real shopkeepers, practising spoken English). Afternoon tea, maybe at the Rye Bakery. 
Evening activity 
Playing Croquet on the Lawn - unlike Alice, we will use real croquet mallets rather than live flamingos to hit the balls, but this very English summer activity is bound to be a firm favourite with your pupils!

Language learning theme and activity 
Vocabulary learning games and songs on the theme of mystical creatures - Have you seen a unicorn? Pupils find out about the legend of King Arthur and the Round Table, Merlin and the Sword in the Stone or read and discuss an extract from The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973), depending on the age and linguistic ability of your pupils.

"Out and about" activity 
Half-day trip to the Quaker town of Street with a visit to the Clarks Shoe Museum and Clarks outlet shopping village. Pupils will be set language challenges to practise using money and shopping vocabulary.

Board Games Evening - Pop to the Shops, Monopoly or Go for Broke (for more advanced learners). 
Outdoor activities 

Day Package 13 The great British Outdoors 

Language learning theme and activity 
Dr Livingstone, I presume? Find out about British adventurers past and present: language games and activities centred around an adventurer's toolkit (practical camping and outdoors vocabulary) and personal attributes to match. 
Applying language skills activity 
Bush craft activity in the Old Railway Cutting, our very own on-site nature reserve: songs and games under the tepee. 
"Out and about" activity 
Whatever the weather, we head to "Mill on the Brue" outdoor activity centre for daredevil experiences such as zip wire, crate building, high ropes etc. 
Evening activity 
Weather permitting, we sing songs around the campfire, toasting marshmallows and/or playing Tug of War. Alternatively, an Adventure-Themed Board Games Evening will be offered. 
A play in a day 

Day Package 14 Shakespeare 

Language learning theme and activity 
Find out how Shakespeare influenced the English language. Learn the origin and use of phrases and idioms such as "salad days", "What is done is done" and "All's well that ends well". 
Applying language skills activity 
A play in a day! All day drama workshop with the aim of producing a mini play. For all you budding actors and actresses, "All the World's a Stage", even here in Bruton! 
Evening activity 
Film night: watch Gnomeo and Juliet (2011 animated U-rated film) or Romeo and Juliet (1996 - certificate 12, starring Leonardo DiCaprio) or the historical drama Shakespeare in Love (1998 - certificate 15, starring Gwyneth Paltrow). The most age-appropriate film will be chosen.
